Life Sketch for Dorothy Williams

 

Dorothy Williams, 99, died on Monday, April 11, 2016 at Asbury Park in Newton.

 

Dorothy was born on November 22, 1916 in Cimarron, Kansas to Carl and Agnes (Davidson) Porter.

 

Dorothy married Gilbert F Williams on May 12, 1950 in Newton, Kansas.  He died on September 7, 1992.

 

Dorothy was an elementary school teacher for forty years. She taught for thirty one years in Newton at Roosevelt, Cooper and Northridge schools.  She also taught in Hesston and in rural schools locally.

She attended Emporia Teachers College and later graduated from Bethel College in 1960. Dorothy was a member of the First Baptist Church, Delta Kappa Gamma Teacher Sorority, the 5051 study club and the First Baptist Church of Newton.

 

Dorothy enjoyed reading and baking. Although she and Gilbert did not have children she loved and enjoyed her many nieces and nephews. Gilbert and Dorothy were avid fans of KU Basketball, the Kansas City Royals, Wichita State sports and they held season tickets to Newton High Athletic programs for many years.

 

Dorothy is survived by three sisters: Berniece Winsky, Joy Payne, and Esther Israel; brother: Wayne Porter; and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents: Carl and Agnes Porter; husband: Gilbert F. Williams;

sisters: Hazel Abrahams, Jean Pierson, Beatrice Porter, Lorene Kater, and Evelyn Hackney; and brothers: Marvin and Eldon Porter.

 

Funeral services are scheduled for 1:00 pm, Friday, April 15, 2016 at the First Baptist Church in Newton. Burial will follow the service at Restlawn Gardens of Memory in rural Newton.  A visitation will be held from 5:00 to 9:00 pm at Petersen Funeral Home.  The family will be present from 6:00 to 7:00 to greet friends and family.
