Edith D. Heisz

d. January 30, 2018

Edith DeMoss Heisz, 90, died January 30, 2018, at Asbury Park, a retirement community in Newton, KS.  She was born on October 23, 1927 at the DeMoss farmhouse in Osborne County, KS, the daughter of Lee (“Poppa”) and Emma Duryea DeMoss.

Edith’s mother died when she was two years old, leaving Poppa to raise her and her four sisters and brother by himself.  She graduated from Osborne High School and Kansas Wesleyan University, and on June 5, 1949, two days after her college graduation, she married Leslie (“Les”) Heisz (who would become a U. Methodist minister) in Osborne, KS.  Together, they served many U. Methodist churches in the Kansas West Conference.  She was an active member of Eastern Star, Lion’s Club, and various womens’ groups at all of the churches where they served.

Edith “pushed back” against the notion that she should just be a minister’s wife.  Therefore, in addition to that role, Edith taught in several secondary schools until Edith and Les moved to the Wichita area in 1973, when she began teaching business courses at the Wichita Business College.  Edith’s final employment was with the large CPA firm, Allen, Gibbs & Houlik, where she was the secretarial supervisor.  She retired in 1994 after 17 years with this firm.

In May 2003, Edith and Les moved to the Asbury Park retirement community in Newton, KS, where they enjoyed seeing old friends and making new friends in their retirement years.  Everyone who knew Edith was impacted by how kind and unselfish she was, and how they never heard her say an unkind word about anyone.  In addition to her kindness, Edith will be missed for many other things, including her delicious chocolate chip cookies, her humor, her frontier spirit, and her mantra in life that “everything is going to work out.”

Edith never really knew her own mother, which caused her to sometimes question her own abilities as the mother of two sons, Kenneth and Keith.  Yet, in the end, no one could question Edith’s unconditional love and devotion to her boys, or her pride in the kind of men that they had become.

Edith is preceded in death by her husband, Les, her brother (Morton DeMoss) and her four sisters (Vera McKnight, Sylva McDaneld, Lela DeMoss, and Frances Woodworth).  Edith is survived by her sons, Kenneth Heisz (and wife, Leslie) and Keith Heisz; grandsons, Hunter, Michael and Evan; and many nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place.  A service celebrating Edith’s life will be held at Trinity Heights United Methodist Church, 1200 Boyd Ave, Newton, KS, on Saturday, June 9, 2018, at 11:00 a.m.  Burial of Edith’s ashes will be held on June 10, 2018 at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery near Courtland, KS.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Good Samaritan Fund at Asbury Park or the Trinity Heights United Methodist Church Foundation Fund, and may be sent in c/o Petersen Funeral Home, 215 N. Main, Newton, KS. 67114.
