Gene Groseclose Hofen 98, died Sunday, February 9, 2014 at Bradford Village Retirement Community in Edmond, Oklahoma.  Gene recently moved to Oklahoma to be near her daughter. She was born February 6, 1916 in Zenith, Kansas the daughter of Laurin and Bessie (Jones) Groseclose.  She graduated from Sylvia High School in 1937.  She was married to Laurel Hofen and he preceded her in death.

 

Gene was a long time resident of Newton, Kansas. She was co-owner of Shadelite Marque Company with her husband where she worked as office manager for nearly 25 years.  She was a charter member of the Trinity Heights United Methodist Church serving the church on various committees throughout the years. She also served as treasurer/literature secretary for United Methodist Women.  Every Sunday for years she sold grocery store coupons to help raise money for special church projects.  She was a member of the Newton Lioness Club, Junior and Senior High PTA President, North Newton City Council member for two terms and was chosen woman of the year 1971 for Religion and Church. She was an associate member of First United Methodist Church in Wichita.

 

She is survived by one daughter Laurina Teske and her husband Paul of Edmond, Oklahoma; son James Laurel and his wife Cindy of Mountain View, California; four grandchildren Laura Hofen, Lindsay Hofen, Lisa Teske and Linda Teske.

 

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers Donald and Harold Groseclose and four sisters Ruby Groseclose, Daisy Moreland, Joyce McMurry and Pat McKay.

 

Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m., Friday February 14, 2014   at Trinity Heights United Methodist Church with The Reverend Amy Lippoldt and The Reverend Donna Friesen presiding.  Visitation will be 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Petersen Funeral Home with the family receiving friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Funeral Home.  Burial will be in Restlawn Gardens of Memory Newton, Kansas

 

Memorials are suggested to Trinity Heights United Methodist Church or American Heart Association in care of Petersen Funeral Home.
