George Hurd 76, died Wednesday August 28, 2013 at his Newton residence. He was born October 2, 1936 in Ft. Scott, Kansas to George Hurd Sr. and Hazel (Foster) Hurd. On August 12, 1966 he married Frances Allison and she preceded him in death on July 18, 2012. They started their married life out in Cottonwood Falls, Kansas before moving to Newton. George was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Newton, Kansas. He began working for Bunting Magnetics as a machinist in Newton in 1979 and retired in 2001. George enjoyed fishing, trap shooting and spending time reading. He also liked to watch movies especially westerns and sci fi. He enjoyed his time at the Newton Area Senior Center and the friends he made at the center. He was a family man and greatly enjoyed spending time with his loving family and many friends.

Survivors include his son Ken and his wife Anita Allison of Newton, KS; daughters: Kay and Don Schommer of Sedgwick, KS and Pat Paquette and Debbie Allison both of Newton, KS; Peggy Carlson and her husband Marcus and her family of Lincolnville, KS; he is also survived by a son Gary and sisters: Anita, Jan, and Judy. grandchildren Mike and Tammy Schommer, Dawn and Chris Wedel, Patti Tunnell, Mark and Dana Paquette, Michelle Anders and her significant other Don McCorkle, Nick Allison, Emily and Tim Boese and 9 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

George is preceded in death by his parents; Beloved wife Frances, son George Hurd III and brother in law Bill Fleming.

Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Newton, Kansas with the Reverend Jim Mainzer presiding. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be 6:30 p.m. Tuesday evening at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday evening with the family receiving friends until 8:30 p.m. following the Rosary.
