Henry H. Janzen

d. May 11, 2013

Henry H. Janzen, 92, died on May 11, 2013, at Kidron Bethel Care Center in North Newton.

Henry was born on April 26, 1921, to Rudolph and Matilda (Schmidt) Janzen in Rosthern, Saskatchewan. The family moved to a farm in the Whitewater area, and Henry graduated from Whitewater High School. Henry married Laura Balzer on July 2, 1944, in rural Whitewater. They were married for almost 68 years prior to Laura’s death in 2012.

Henry was a stockman, farmer and a retired employee of Hesston Corporation. Henry served on the boards of the Harvey County Sheep Association and McLain Grain, and was a member of the Grace Hill Mennonite Church.

Henry was a man of great ingenuity who had an engineer’s mind when it came to creating things. He had a strong work ethic, and would stop whatever he was doing to help a neighbor or a friend. He loved to tell jokes and kept others laughing with his quick wit. Henry was a fun-loving grandpa who teased his grandchildren and even let his granddaughters paint his nails and put curlers in his hair when they were young.

He is survived by: two daughters, Sandra (Donald) Lanzrath of Newton and Susan (Marshall) Shelley of Wheaton, Ill.; a sister, Clara Koehn of Newton; six grandchildren, Darrel (Tiffany) Lanzrath, Russell (Kara) Lanzrath, Andrew Lanzrath, Stacey (Will) Lingle, Kelsey (Anthony) Kivlehan, and Bayly Shelley; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; grandson, Toby Shelley; granddaughter, Mandy Shelley; brother, Bob Janzen; and sisters, Edna Lawson and Ruth Zook.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 14, at Grace Hill Mennonite Church in rural Whitewater. Visitation was Monday, May 13, at Petersen Funeral Home. A graveside committal will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Grace Hill Mennonite Church.

Memorials may be sent to Camp Mennoscah or Grace Hill Mennonite Church
