Juell A. “Jay” Hanson

d. October 8, 2016

Jay Hanson, born Dec. 21, 1926 in Oakland, NE, son of Mary (Bergquist) and Arden Hanson. He attended high school in Oakland, NE and college at University of Nebraska. He married Bernice Berry in Newton, KS, on June 12 1955.

After college, he was employed as a pharmacist in Imperial and Omaha, NE, as well as Ft Lupton, CO. From 1963 to 1991, he and Bernice operated Hanson Drug Store in Lindsborg, KS. Jay made it a point to walk to and from work each day regardless of weather conditions. He had many interests, but little time to pursue them. He made time to read and watch Nebraska Cornhusker football, and loved making people laugh with his unique sense of humor.

After retiring from the drug store, he and Bernice traveled in their motor home, visiting many places in the US, such as Washington DC; New York City; Indiana; and Washington. Winters were enjoyed in south Texas, where Jay assisted with the reading programs in the middle schools, and was recognized for his 15 years of volunteering. In Texas, they met the family of Tony and Paula Garces, who have become treasured friends to Jay and Bernice.

He is survived by his wife, Bernice of the home; children, William (Barb) of Wichita, KS; Larry of Maize, KS; Kathleen of Clarkdale, AZ; grandchildren, Brandon and Tatum; sister, Ardis Decker of Pueblo, CO; nieces and nephew, Joanie, Julie and John.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Elaine, of Portland, OR.

At his request, Jay’s body was bequeathed to the KU School of Medicine in Kansas City.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at First United Methodist Church in downtown Newton, with The Reverend Dr. Douglas Tofteland presiding

Memorials are suggested to Good Shepherd Hospice in care of Petersen Funeral Home.
