Mary Ellen Loyd, 95, widow of Dr. Paul Loyd, passed away on March 29, 2014 at the Presbyterian Manor in Newton. She was born on July 1, 1918 to Ed and Ella (Rapp) Corman in El Dorado, Kansas. She grew up in El Dorado and graduated from El Dorado High School where she established many lifelong friendships.  She was a graduate of Kansas State University with a degree in home economics and was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority.  She continued to enjoy her association and travels with other Pi Phi alums throughout her life.

After Paul’s discharge from the Army, they settled in Newton, Kansas where Mary Ellen quickly became involved with the community. She was a volunteer with the Girl Scout Little House. She was involved with a number of groups and activities including Junior Reading Circle, Supper Club, Lambs Investment Club and the Women’s Golf Association at the Newton Country Club.  She was an active member of St. Matthews Episcopal Church, serving on the altar Guild, various committees, as well as volunteering with the thrift shop and Mirror Inc.  Mary Ellen was passionate about bridge and played with the same group for over 50 years.

She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother to her four children, seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.  Mary Ellen is survived by her children: Jayne Nordstrom (Ed), Jody Ensign (Don) and Mike Loyd (Jill); grandchildren: Jill, Niki, Kristopher, Jordan, Alison, Juliana, and Ben; and three great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul; son, Thomas; parents: Ed and Ella Corman and brother, Merrill Corman.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, 10:00 AM, April 2nd, at St. Matthews Episcopal Church in Newton.  In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established with St. Matthews Episcopal Church Operational Endowment Fund and Caring Hands Humane Society of Newton
