Mary Maxine Smith

Mary Maxine Smith 100, died Sunday, January 10, 2106 at Newton Presbyterian Manor. She was born December 17, 1915 in Halstead Township to Alton Russell and Elizabeth (Severance) Challender.

She graduated from Sedgwick High School and attended Bethel College and Kansas State University. She graduated from Salt City Business College in Hutchinson, Kansas.

On June 27, 1943 she married Russell Vern Smith in Hutchinson, Kansas. He preceded her in death on December 24, 2002.

Moving to Newton in 1945 from Tulsa, Oklahoma she was employed as a secretary at several agricultural offices, Somers, Robb and Robb Law Firm and Bankers Investment.

She belonged to Salem United Methodist Church, 50-53 study club and for 40 year was active in the Newton Bowling Leagues. She also worked with the Harvey County Fair for 18 years and Kansas State Fair for 4 years.

Mary Maxine is survived by several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother and sister in law Willard and Dolores Challender as well as one nephew and one niece.

Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m., Thursday, January 14, 2016 at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Ron Kite of Salem United Methodist Church presiding. Visitation will be 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Wednesday evening at Petersen Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Burrton City Cemetery, Burrton, Kansas.
