Robert Warkentin

d. February 24, 2013

Robert H. “Bob” Warkentin, 70, went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, at Harry Hynes Hospice in Wichita.

He was born Aug. 11, 1942, in Wichita to Harold R. and Eva (Jamison) Warkentin. He was raised in Beatrice, Neb.

Bob, along with his wife Shirley, worked making a difference in many children’s lives through their working years. They worked at a children’s home in Ft. Worth, Texas, and many years at Youthville in Newton, where they touched many young girls’ lives.

Bob had a great faith and trust in the Lord. He looked forward to sharing the gospel and caring for many sick and elderly through their church and Bible study groups. Anyone who stopped by to visit with Bob and Shirley were always warmly greeted and there was no doubt he was an avid Huskers fan.

Bob enjoyed gardening and tending flowers. He also relaxed and enjoyed caring for his backyard fish pond. Over the years Bob made many woodcarvings and yard signs that he enjoyed sharing. Bob will most certainly be remembered as an unselfish person who gave of himself to raise others up.

He is survived by his wife: Shirley (Smith) (Gillock) Warkentin of the home; son: Robert and Brooke Warkentin of Greeley, Colo.; daughter, Sarah and Maurice Montano; three stepchildren: Bob and Mary Potter of Wichita, Dan and Tina Potter of Locust Grove, Okla., P.J. and Gary Hargus of Wichita; two adopted children, Jessica and Steve Young of Newton and James Warkentin of Newton; brothers: Duane and Kathy Warkentin of Miltonvale, Ron Warketin of Seattle, Wash., Dick and his wife, Vicky of Greeley, Colo., and Larry and his wife, Susan of Greeley, Colo.; 15 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

His parents preceded him in death.

A service of celebration of Bob’s life will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 1, 2013, at Grace Community Church, with Pastor David E. Reimer officiating. A committal service will be 9:30 a.m. Friday, March 1, 2013, at Greenwood Cemetery, Newton. Visitation will be 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, 2013, at Petersen Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to Living Waters, Harvey County Homeless Shelter, or Love a Child.
