Vivian M. Smith, 93, died on February 23, 2013 at Kansas Christian Home in Newton, Kansas. Vivian was born on March 17, 1919, St. Patrick’s Day to William and Vivian (Carter) Sheffler in Halstead, Kansas. She was one of 14 children.

Vivian married Edwin Smith on January 2, 1936 in Newton. They were married for 68 years until his passing in 2004. Vivian was a long time beautician and shop owner in the Newton area. One of her great loves was cooking. Her children remember her as a great cook, especially for her pies, breads and chicken noodle soup. Vivian was a loving grandmother and great grandmother. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Newton. She was very much a people person and she loved her country and gospel music and singing, so much that she preferred that over television. Vivian had a love for “mean” little dogs especially her Chico, Pedro, Sparky and Benji. She is survived by her daughters: Bonnie and Bob Baumgartner, Joyce Gough, Sue Annett 6 brothers and sisters; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Vivian Sheffler; and 7 brothers and sisters.

A memorial service will be held at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel at 1:00 P.M., Friday, March 1, 2013. A memorial has been established with Harry Hynes Hospice, 313 South Market, Wichita, KS. 67202.
