Donald L. “Don” Burgess 66, died Sunday December 26, 2021 at NMC Health in Newton. He was born August 3, 1955 in Fowler, Kansas to Porter J. and Helen M. (McInteer) Burgess.

Don attended Trinity Heights United Methodist Church in Newton.

Don attended grade and middle school in Minneola and graduated in 1973 from Peabody High School.

Don was a local fixture in downtown Newton for many years. He worked at the former McCall Shoes, Newton Appliance and Halstead Hospital. He could most recently be found serving customers at Anderson Bookstore where he has worked for over 25+ years.  Don always had a genuine smile and greeting for customers, knowing most by name when they came in.

He enjoyed woodworking and Antiques. Don could be found most Sunday afternoons browsing the aisle of Metcalf Sisters antique mall searching for his next treasure.  He also enjoyed caring for and fixing up his home.

Family was important to Don and he looked forward to spending time with his siblings and nieces and nephews. He also was a loving son and enjoyed the time with his parents when they were living.

He is preceded in death by his parents, sister Gail Smith and numerous aunts & uncles.

He is survived by his sister Debbie (Kirk) Matz; brothers Bud (Judith) Maxfield and Scott (Mel) Burgess.  He is also survived by 6 nieces and nephews and 7 great nieces and nephews and Aunt Ruth Burgess Baker.

The family will have a gathering and visitation on Sunday January 2, 2022 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Petersen Funeral Home. They will receive friends from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the funeral home.  A private family interment will take place at a later date in the Appleton Township cemetery in Minneola, Kansas. Mask are required at the visitation please.

In Lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Newton Fire/EMS in care of Petersen Funeral Home.
