Alma McGuire

December 4, 2014

Alma Neufeld McGuire 86, died Thursday, December 4, 2014 at Schowalter Villa in Hesston, Kansas.  She was born January 12, 1928 in Roslau, Germany to George & Lena Michael.  She was the youngest of 3 sisters, Anna & Clara preceding her in death.

Alma married Peter Neufeld in Roslau, Germany Dec 21, 1946.  In  December 1951 they  immigrated to Newton, Ks. bringing with them children Peter, Gerhard & Hans.  They were sponsored by First Mennonite Church.  Speaking only German, the family quickly learned English. Even in her later years when Alma would speak it would be with a German accent.  When asked where she was from she would always say Germany & smile

Alma’s husband Peter died Oct 13, 1963.  She married Don McGuire in 1969, he died Dec 19, 1997.

 Alma worked in the kitchen at Prairie View for over 40 years.   She was referred to as the little singing German.  Alma especially loved the children there, offering “seconds” & always had gift bags of candy for them at holiday time.

Alma is survived by her sons Peter(Ali); Gerhard(Julie); & Hans,  7 Grandchildren & many Great Grandchildren. 

Alma will always be remembered for her generosity & cheerful spirit.

Visitation will be 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Monday December 8, 2014 at Petersen Funeral Home. A graveside committal will be 11:00 a.m. at Greenwood Cemetery in Newton followed by a memorial service at 1:00 p.m. at Schowalter Villa Chapel in Hesston, Kansas.  Chaplain’s Wendy Miller, Bill Eichelberger and Pastor Kay Schroeder will be presiding.

Memorials are suggested to Schowalter Villa or Good Shepherd Hospice in care of Petersen Funeral Home.

  1. I grew up with Alma living 2 houses down on SE 2nd. What fun times there were on the block. I was really glad to see her happy face when I started at Prairie View 33 years ago!!! She always kept me informed of how Hans was doing!!!! She also always asked about my folks. She will be missed . You are all in my prayers.
