Bernadine Dorothy Manning

December 6, 2020

Bernadine Dorothy Manning, 94, died on December 6, 2020 at her home.

She was born in Philadelphia, PA on May 20, 1926, the daughter of William Penn and Bridgett Brown.

On August 1, 1960, Bernadine married Norman Manning; he preceded her in death in 2010.

When Bernadine was young she was an amateur actress and model.

Bernadine attended Wichita State University, receiving her bachelor’s degree in English and Education in 1972.

She was very active with the Sedgwick County American Legion, and in the 1980’s she started the flying of the flags on veterans’ graves on Memorial Day. It started with just a few flags, but has now grown to hundreds.

Bernadine enjoyed playing cards with her friends, dancing, gardening, reading and cooking. She was also fond of traveling and loved the ocean and lighthouses.

Bernadine is survived by her daughter, Tina (Steve) Schaefer; son, David (Theresa Montgomery) Ragan; step sons, Norman Jr. (Kathy) Manning and David (Terrie) Manning; step daughter, Donna (Ken) Eshelman; 11 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Norman Manning Sr.; son, Neal Stephen Ragan; and one brother, Penn Brown.

Due to COVID restrictions a private family graveside will take place.

Memorial contributions may be made to American Legion Post 268 in care of Petersen Funeral Home.
