Betty L. Gilbert 90, died Thursday, October 6, 2016 at her Newton residence. She was born April 4, 1926 in Wichita, Kansas to Claude C. and Etta (Green) Shaft. On June 26, 1962 she married Herman D. Gilbert at Topeka, Kansas and he survives of the home.

 

Betty attended Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas and nursing school at the Susan B. Allen hospital in El Dorado, Kansas graduating in 1959. She worked as a Registered Nurse for nearly 20 years at the Susan B. Allen hospital in El Dorado. She moved to Newton in 1982 with her husband and began working at Prairie View in Newton, retiring in 1992.

 

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Newton where she served on the Board of Deacons. She was a past member of the Harvey County Historical Society. Betty was also a member of the Chapter AG of the P.E.O. in Newton. Music was a passion for Betty. She could be found in her den often listening to the many tapes of her beloved classical music.

 

Betty is survived by her husband Herman D. Gilbert of the home; she is also survived by 4 nephews and one niece.

 

She is preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers Stanley E. Shaft and Claude C. Shaft Jr and two sisters in law Margaret Rice and Maxine Shaft.

 

Memorial service will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 12, 2016 at First Presbyterian Church 900 Columbus Newton, Kansas with The Reverend Deborah Hollifield presiding. Inurnment will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 12, 2016 at Prairie Grove Cemetery in Cottonwood Falls Kansas.

 

Memorials are suggested to Caring Hands Humane Society in care of Petersen Funeral Home.
