Carolyn Sue Sturgeon 76, died Monday, June 26, 2017 at Quaker Hill Manor in Baxter Springs, Kansas. She was born October 6, 1940 in Galena, Kansas to Harold and Zenobia (Cook) Boyes. On September 23, 1961 she married Joe Sturgeon in Newton, Kansas and he preceded her in death on July 2, 1995.
Carolyn was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Newton. She worked at the former Wilson Drug in Newton where she brightened many peoples Christmas with her gift wrapping. Through the years Carolyn also worked at Sears and was an original employee of the Newton Walmart where she enjoyed greeting customers, being a cashier and had a love of serving people in the lawn and garden section. Carolyn also enjoyed spending time in her own garden tending her many beautiful flowers and feeding the birds that visited, especially cardinals.
She was an avid sports fan, especially baseball and could be found many afternoons following the Atlanta Braves among the many other baseball franchises. Carolyn was always in the stands supporting her son’s college baseball team and later her grandkids as well.
Carolyn’s greatest joy was being a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt and friend. She was always quick with a smile and hug and looked forward to spending time with those she loved.
Carolyn is survived by her sons: Todd and Cim Sturgeon and Michael and Andrea Sturgeon both of Newton, Kansas; daughter Crystal Sturgeon of Hesston Kansas; brother Danny Boyes and Cheryl of Wichita, Kansas; Sister in Law Judy Boyes of Newton, Kansas. She is also survived her grandchildren Kylie (John) Sommers, Cole Sturgeon, Drake Sturgeon, Giovanni Ruiz, Taitiana Ruiz, Thalia Ruiz, Jayden Ruiz and her close friend Rod “Red” Johnson of Baxter Springs, Kansas
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband and brother Gary Boyes.
Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, June 30, 2017 at Our Lady Of Guadalupe Catholic Church with The Reverend Nicholas Voelker, celebrant. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be 6:00 p.m., Thursday, June 29, 2017 at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday with the family receiving friends until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Newton, Kansas.
Memorials are suggested to St. Mary’s School in care of Petersen Funeral Home.
