Dorothy E. (Barkman) Roberts 91, died Sunday, July 3, 2016 at Pine Village in Moundridge, Kansas. She was born April 5, 1925 in near Lehigh, Kansas to Jacob and Lydia (Esau) Barkman.  During some of her growing up years Dorothy lived in Louisiana.  She retained a love of spiritual music she gained during her time in Louisiana thorough out her life.  Dorothy worked as a baker at Dolly Madison in Emporia and also as a cook at both the former Colonial House in Hesston, Kansas and Lee and Ida’s restaurants in Emporia, Newton and Hutchinson.  She was a former resident of Kidron Bethel Retirement community in North Newton.  Dorothy enjoyed tending her flowers and flower gardening. She was a lifelong animal lover and volunteered caring for animals at the Emporia Animal Shelter and supported the Caring Hands Humane Society in Newton.  She had a love for all animals but especially enjoyed the company of the many dogs and cats she had through the years.  Dorothy’s greatest joy was that of Mother and Grandmother. She greatly looked forward to spending time with her daughters and her many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

 

Dorothy is survived by her two daughters: Nikki and her husband Jim Besse of Wichita, KS and Cherie LaGree Yoder and her husband Orville of Newton, KS. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.

 

She is preceded in death by her parents and one sister Ruby Barkman and one brother Jake Barkman Jr.

 

Funeral service will 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 6, 2016 at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel in Newton, Kansas. Burial will be in the Halstead City Cemetery, Halstead, Kansas.  Visitation will be Noo
