Dorothy M. Legge 87, died Monday, June 15, 2015 at Newton Presbyterian Manor.  She was born September 23, 1927 near Britt, Iowa to Otto and Hattie (Kalstorf) Klinge. On July 21, 1948 she married Richard D. “Dick” Legge at Junction City, Kansas and he preceded her in death on April 20, 1979.  Dorothy was the owner of Cunningham’s by Legge in downtown Newton from 1981 to 2002. She started working for Townsend’s Clothing in 1958 and purchased the clothing store in 1981. Dorothy was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Newton. She was a member of the Beauceant and Order of the Eastern Star serving as past worthy matron. She was also a member of the soroptomist, Business and Professional Women and the Newton Chamber of Commerce. Dorothy also enjoyed the friends she made at the Credit Women’s Breakfast Club. She was a loving mother and wife and looked forward to spending time with her many friends and especially loved her time with her grandkids and great grandkids

 

She is survived by her daughters: Jacki Rice of Newton, Kansas and Judy Kelly of Inola, Oklahoma and sister: Mable Barkema of Belmond, Iowa; 4 grandchildren Jack Richard “JR” and his wife Tonya Rice, Joseph Rice, Keri Kelly and Kimberly Kelly and 3 great grandchildren Serenity Kelly, Riley Workman and Ruby Grace Rice

 

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, sons in law Jack Rice and Ben Kelly and 4 brothers

 

Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m., Friday, June 19, 2015 at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel with Chaplain Jerroll Martens presiding.  Visitation will be 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday evening at Petersen Funeral Home with the family receiving friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. 

 

Burial will be in Restlawn Gardens of Memory in rural Newton.

Memorials are suggested to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice or Newton Salvation Army in care of Petersen Funeral Home.
