Yusuf Qamar MD passed away in the presence of his wife and two sons on October 26, 2024 at the age of 86.
Yusuf was born on April 10, 1938 in London, England to Razi Uddin Ahmad and Nayyar Jehan Begum. After World War II, his family relocated from India to Peshawar, Pakistan. Yusuf graduated from Khyber Medical College in 1962, where he was named the top medical school graduate in the country and personally presented two gold medals by the President of Pakistan.
After graduation, Yusuf engaged in research while preparing for exams to secure a residency in the United States. In 1963, he was invited to join the Internal Medicine and Cardiology programs at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas.
At Wesley, Yusuf met Sandra (Sandi) Corfman, a nursing student from a farm near Whitewater. They married on June 19, 1966 and settled in Newton in 1969. For the next 40 years, Yusuf and Sandi worked side-by-side at Axtell Clinic, Axtell Christian Hospital, and Newton Medical Center, dedicating their lives to the health and well-being of the Newton community. Yusuf was honored to be part of this community, and exceptionally proud to be an American, where he could live in freedom with opportunity.
Yusuf is survived by his beloved wife Sandi, their eldest son Tariq and wife Liz, along with grandchildren Braxton and Brielle of Scottsdale, Arizona, and their youngest son Kenon and wife Kelly, with grandchildren Katarina and Cole of Leawood, Kansas.
He is also survived by family from Pakistan, including three sisters—Meena, Shabnam, and Yasmeen, his treasured younger brother, Usman, as well as many cherished nieces and nephews.
Yusuf was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Arif, and his in-laws Kenneth and Maxine Corfman of Whitewater.
There will be a short visitation Wednesday, October 30, 2024 from 9:00am - 10:00am at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel.
A memorial service will follow at Petersen Funeral Home on Wednesday, October 30, 2024 at 10:00am.
A private family burial at Whitewater Cemetery after the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to Newton Medical Center.
