Gary L. Dunbaugh, 68, died on December 8, 2021, at his home in Newton, Kansas.

He was born in Liverpool, England, on March 4, 1953, the son of Leonidas Jr. and Pauline (Speight) Dunbaugh.

Gary joined the Army in 1973, serving as an operating room technician at the Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center in Denver, Colorado.

In 1977 Gary continued his nursing career journey. He attended Wesley School of Nursing while simultaneously working towards his bachelor’s degree in nursing science at WSU.

Throughout his career Gary worked for the Halstead Hospital, Wesley Medical Center, Hertzler Clinic, Via Christi St. Francis, Eagle Med Flight Service, Kansas Cardiology, and most recently the Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center. Gary practiced nursing in various capacities serving as an A.P.R.N., P.R.N., critical care nurse, nurse clinician in the field of cardiology, ACLS Instructor, and as a flight nurse.

Gary was a member of the American Nurses Association, Kansas State Nurses Association, American Association of Critical Care Nurses, and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners.

Gary enjoyed traveling, especially with friends. But his participation in activities was virtually limitless, from Disneyworld, to Botanical, wine tastings, and WSU basketball, concerts to plays. He had also been an avid snow skier and scuba diver.

He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Gary is survived by his sister, Sharon Allen; nephew, Joshua White and great-nieces Amelia and Harlow White; nephew, Claude Allen and great-niece, Macyn Allen; niece, Alissa Ashbaugh and great-niece Alayna Blades and great-nephew, Toren Ashbaugh; and many other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonidas and Pauline Dunbaugh; brother, David Wayne Dunbaugh; maternal grandparents, Enoch and Edith Speight; and paternal grandparents, Leonidas Sr. and Bernice Dunbaugh.

Following Gary’s wishes, cremation has taken place.
