Harold G. “Gene” Reid

Heavens fairway got a little more crowded Harold G. “Gene” Reid died Thursday June 9, 2022 at the age of 101 at NMC Health in Newton. He was born February 6, 1921 in Edmond (Norton County) Kansas to Henry and Lola Mae (Snow) Reid on February 12, 1940 he married Shirley Dean and she preceded him death in 2001.

Gene worked for the United States Post Office and was the assistant golf pro at the Hesston Municipal Golf Course.

He served his county in the United States Army during WW II and was promoted to the rank of Second Lieutenant.

Golf was an important part of Gene’s life being self-taught from the age of 11. He learned many important life lessons on the golf course.  As important as golf was, his family was his most important treasure. He greatly enjoyed his time with his family and friends.  He especially loved his “greats” as he called all his grandchildren and treasured every story and moment, he could spend with them.

Harold and Shirley loved music and spent many evenings dancing to the Big Band’s and country music, his favorite the Sons of the Pioneers.

He was a longtime active member of the Trinity Heights United Methodist Church in Newton; Past Master of the Newton Masonic Lodge #142 and a bowling group for seniors at the Eastgate Lanes in Newton.

He is survived by his daughter Patricia D. (Tim) Timmons; and son Daryl G. (Aleda) Reid; sister-in-law Betty Jo Reid; and sister Ruth Ann Blackwell. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren, 2 step grandsons, 19 great grandchildren and 9 great great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Shirley, daughter Dana Joy Sartain, brother Robert L Reid, nephew Vance G. Reid.

Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 14, 2022 at Trinity Heights United Methodist Church in Newton with The Reverend Donna Voteau presiding.  Visitation will be 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at Petersen Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church. Private family burial will take place at Greenwood Cemetery Newton, Kansas.
