Jimmy Wilford Grow, affectionately known as Jim, passed away on January 16, 2025, at the age of 71 in Newton, Kansas. Born on November 24, 1953, in Wichita, Kansas. Jim grew up in Augusta, Kansas and spent most of his adult life as a resident of Burrton, Kansas.
Jim was a proud U.S. Navy veteran, having served in the Vietnam War from 1971 to 1973. His dedication to his country was a defining aspect of his life. He loved to do woodworking, a hobby he cherished deeply. Also known for his love of tinkering in his shop, Jim often poured his creativity and craftsmanship into every project he undertook over the years.
Throughout his life, Jim proudly held memberships in the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and the American Legion. His spirit of camaraderie shone brightly as he participated annually in the Kansas Veterans & Family Reunion events. Notably, he also held a special affection for family reunions that reinforced the bonds with his loved ones.
Jim leaves behind a loving family who will remember him with great affection. He is survived by his loving family: Jennifer (Jeremy) Sutcliffe, Gayle Benitez, Jamie (Chris) Grow, Deborah Grow, and Mike (Dawana) Grow. He took pride in being a grandfather to eight grandchildren, as well as a great-grandfather to seven great-grandchildren, all of whom were a source of joy and pride in his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth Rude and Jimmy Grow, his brothers, Charles and Jimmie Lee, and one grandson, Kevin Rodriguez. Each of these losses shaped who Jim was and the love he shared with his surviving family.
Visitation services for Jim will be held at Petersen Family Funeral Home in Newton, Kansas, on January 21, 2025, from 5 PM to 9 PM. A funeral service will follow at the First Christian Church in Burrton, Kansas, on January 22, 2025, at 10 AM, with graveside burial to follow at Burrton Cemetery with military bugle and flag ceremony. Followed by lunch served for everyone back at the church at noon.
Memorial Suggestion: American Legion Post 192 - left in care of Petersen Funeral Home.
