Johnnie Ronald “Ron” Sturgeon 80, Passed away on October 30, 2018 at Schowalter Villa in Hesston, Kansas. He was born on February 24, 1938 to John and Jean (Mason) Sturgeon in Hutchinson, Ks where he lived until the age of 7. From there his family moved to Newton, Ks. He attended St. Mary’s School through the 8th grade, then Newton High School graduating in 1956. He spent two years serving in the Navy then returned to Newton. In 1959 he married Alice Navin. All of their seven children were born in Newton. He worked for the railroad then went in to insurance. His Career moved him and his family to Omaha, NE in 1973 and Muskogee, OK in 1982. He retired at the age of 67. He and Alice moved back to Newton in 2009.
Ron was an avid golfer, an active member of his church, and a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by his brother, Pat (Betty) Sturgeon; sister Anna-Marie (Le Roy) Younger; wife Alice; children, Susan (Michael) Mannion, Joan Sturgeon, Tom Sturgeon, Lewis (Sonia) Sturgeon and Denise (Eric) McClure; 20 grand-children, 14 great grandchildren and 3 foster great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents; Brother Joe (Carolyn) Sturgeon; and children Mark Sturgeon and Paul Sturgeon.
Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 5, 2018 at St. Mary Catholic Church with The Reverend Nicholas Voelker, Celebrant. Visitation will be 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday with a Recitation of the Holy Rosary at 4:00 p.m. all at Petersen Funeral Home. The family will receive friends until 5:00 p.m. following Rosary.
Burial with Navy Honors will be in the St. Mary Catholic Cemetery Newton, Kansas.
Memorials are suggested to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Ronald McDonald House, St. Mary’s School or St. Mary’s church in care of Petersen Funeral Home.
