Joyce D. DuFriend, 87, passed away Thursday, November 23, 2023 in Wichita, KS. She was born on February 4th, 1936 in Walton, KS – to Leto and Lester McClure of Walton, KS. She attended Walton schools throughout her childhood. Her parents, and Clayton McClure, Morris McClure, Marvin McClure, Virgil McClure, Viola Gilmore, Theda Merrit and Thelma Minard, brothers and sisters, proceeded her in death, as well as many cousins and loving family and friends.
Joyce’s first job was with Central Insurance. Her second job was to be a Professional Marine Corps wife to James Max DuFriend, Jr. She loved supporting 4-H. Joyce sang in multiple choirs and was highly involved in the music at Walton Methodist Church – presenting Children’s time in the church as well.
Joyce retired from Axtell Clinic, Newton, KS.
In her later years, she resided in care at Kidron Bethel Village, North Newton, KS. She continued to extend herself to family, friends and caregivers with a strong fight for life and hope. Her love of music was enduring.
Joyce is survived by her two sisters Betty Smith and Janice Capps. She is also survived by her three children, James Max DuFriend III of Newton, Lucinda Dodd (Rick) of Newton and Elizabeth (Steve) Schrag of Dallas. She has six grandchildren and four great-grand children.
Visitation: The family will receive friends on Friday, December 1st from 6:00-8:00 PM at Petersen Family Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Walton Methodist Church, Walton, KS on Saturday, December 2nd at 11:00AM - with a graveside service and burial following at the Walton Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Petersen Funeral Home, in which the funds will be forwarded and used for the angel tree for the Newton Salvation Army for families for Christmas.
