  1. Irene Pierce 93, died Monday October 29, 2018 at Newton Presbyterian Manor. She was born September 10, 1925 in Chelsea, Oklahoma to Cyrus and Sylvia (Patton) Starns.

 

Irene was a graduate of Matfield Green High School and Kansas State Teachers College now Emporia State University.  She worked as a high school business teacher and vocal instructor in Fall River Kansas and Matfield Green Kansas.  She was retired from the former Railroad Savings and Loan in Newton as an insurance supervisor. 

 

On July 6, 1945 she married Max Pierce at Matfield Green Kansas and he survives.  She was a longtime active member of the First Baptist Church in Newton where she freely shared her time through the years including teaching Sunday School, singing in the choir and a member of the women’s missionary society among her numerous church activities. Irene and Max made many cherished friends at their church and made many memories through the years.

 

Irene married the love of her life Max and together they raised 3 children who she adored. Following her retirement she and Max enjoyed traveling and especially loved their camper trailer that they took to Texas, Arizona and Louisiana. 

 

Irene is survived by her daughter Kathy & Jim Haden of Halstead, Kansas; sons: Ron and Bonnie Pierce of Newton, Kansas and Steve and Mary Pierce of Maize, Kansas. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

 

She is preceded in death by her parents and one sister Phyllis Brock and two brothers Jack Starns and Galen Starns.

 

Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Friday November 2nd at First Baptist Church in Newton, Kansas with Pastor Chip Bungard presiding. Visitation will be at Petersen Funeral Home Thursday November 1st from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 7:00 p.m. p.m. 8:30 p.m. Burial will be in the Restlawn Gardens of Memory Rural Newton, Kansas.

 

Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church in care of Petersen Funeral Home.
