Larry Thompson Sr.

Larry Thompson, Sr., 77, went to be with his Lord on February 28, 2016. His life was dedicated to serving the Lord and leading others to Christ. He was born in Swanville, MN to Theadore Thompson and Crystal Burch in 1938. Larry grew up on a lakeshore in Northern Minnesota where he attended a one-room schoolhouse. The family moved to California where he graduated from Poly High School in Riverside, CA. In 1961 while attending Life Bible College in Los Angeles, CA he married the love of his life, Mollie Wade Thompson. He graduated from seminary in 1963. They were assistant pastors in El Cerrito, CA before moving to Concordia, KS in 1964 to pastor the Four Square Church. Larry also was a pastor in South Dakota before moving his family to Newton, KS in 1971 where he pastored Hillcrest Community Church for almost 30 years before retiring.

 

He served the Newton Community not only as a church leader, but as a member of the Substance Abuse board from 1978-1984 and was a 1992 class graduate of Leadership Newton.

 

Larry was proceeded in death by his father, Theadore Thompson, mother Crystal Thompson and brothers Ted and Tommy Thompson. Larry is survived by his wife, Mollie Thompson, daughters Desiree and her husband Kent Martens, Melissa and her husband Larry Beck and son, Larry Thompson, Jr and his wife, Angela as well as 9 grandchildren, John and his wife Roxanne, Alex, Kenzie Martens and Madison, Kennedy, Jack Beck and London, Lauren, Olivia Thompson.

 

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Thursday, March 3, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at the Mennonite Brethren Church, 610 West Randall in Hesston, KS. Memorials may be made to New Life Covenant Youth Camp Scholarship fund, 2301 North Hoover Rd. Wichita, KS 67205.

  6. Larry was a wonderful, kind and compassionate man. When he taught the word he brought incredible depth and insight in a way that made it accessible to all who listened. He taught us to plumb the depths end expect a harvest of God’s infinite love and goodness. He always taught and ministered always through the eyes of love of the Father, never through religion, so grace could manifest and transform the listener. He will be greatly missed.

  9. Mollie and Family, I am so sorry to hear about Larry. My first memories or Larry and Mollie was at Foursquare Youth Camps in Missouri. In 1985 Larry preformed my wedding to Bob Hoover. You have always been a very special couple and family. Love and prayers to all of you. Linda Hoover

  14. Pastor Larry and Mollie and family meant so much to me in the late 70s & 80s. They taught me a more personal relationship with the Lord. I will never forget the kindness of Pastor Larry. We will see him again with our Father in paradise. My heart goes out to the family at this time.

  16. I attended LIFE with Larry. He arranged a double date situation. Last I heard he was pastoring in S. Dakota. Sorry to learn of his passing so many years later.
