Matilda G. Curiel 83, died Monday, January 16, 2017 at Hospice House in Hutchinson, Kansas.   She was born September 9, 1933 in Newton, Kansas to Felix and Anastasia (Ramirez) Romero.

 

Matilda was married to Severo Curiel Sr. (who survives) and together they raised 6 children.  Later on, she spent many happy years with her partner John (Doug) Williams.

 

Matilda was a member of the St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Hutchinson, Kansas.  She was a woman of great faith who prayed often.  She was not afraid to work and loved providing for her family including cooking meals and spiritual guidance.  Matilda loved her Mexican Music, and had a soft spot in her heart for her cats. She also had a green thumb and enjoyed caring for her houseplants.  Following football (especially the Dallas Cowboys) was one of her enjoyments.  Matilda loved making trips to her sister’s cabin in Colorado. Her greatest joy was that of Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother and friend and she looked forward to spending time with her loving family and many friends.

 

She is survived by her children Anthony (Belinda) Curiel  of Maize, KS; Julian (Lynn) Curiel Sr. Newton, KS; Robert (Sarah) Curiel Valley Center, KS; Gina (John) Ackerman Jr. of Hutchinson, KS and Marianne (Darrel) Bonneau Wichita, KS.  Sister Margaret (Romero) Montenegro of Wichita, KS. She is also survived by 16 grandkids and 12 great grandkids. 

 

She is preceded in death by her son Severo Curiel Jr., parents Felix and Anastasia Romero, siblings: John Romero, Pete Romero, Theodore Romero, Mary (Romero) Tafolla, Katherine (Romero) Guzman, Florentino (Gino) Romero, and Morris (Tito) Romero

 

Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, January 20, 2017 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Newton with The Reverend Nicholas Voelker Celebrant. Visitation will be 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday with a Recitation of the Holy Rosary at 6:00 p.m. at Petersen Funeral Home. The family will receive friends following the Rosary.

 

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society in care of Petersen Funeral Home.
