With an impressive spanning over 31 years at Kansas Gas Service and additional years spent at Graber's Ace Hardware, Melvin dedicated his life to serving his community. His extensive knowledge and cheerful demeanor left an indelible mark on those around him. He was the embodiment of a passionate craftsman, creating beautiful furniture and woodworking pieces tailored to the needs of his daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, ensuring they had special treasures to cherish. His creative spirit shone through as he astoundingly turned ordinary materials into extraordinary keepsakes.
A proud graduate of Newton High School, Melvin was also known for his dedication to his beloved Masonic Lodge. He was a Master Mason, serving as Past Master of Newton Lodge #142 and past Grand Deputy of Kansas, while also contributing as a Past Worthy Patron of the Order of Eastern Star in Newton. His accomplishments in Masonry reflect a life steeped in service, brotherhood, and integrity.
Beyond his professional and community achievements, Melvin was a devoted family man. He married the love of his life, Bessie L. (Myers), on April 8, 1955, and together they enjoyed 69 wonderful years. Their bond was a strong foundation that nurtured their two daughters, Janet (Elon) Emig and Juanita (Jonathan) Richstatter, who carry forward his legacy of love and kindness. His family grew to include six grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren, all of whom will forever hold dear the memories of Melvin's laughter, warmth, and wisdom.
Melvin’s passion for the outdoors and raising birddogs brought him immense joy, and he often delighted in camping with his daughters during their childhood. He was not only a skilled craftsman and outdoorsman but also embodied the perfect balance of being loving, caring, and awesome. His approach to life was deeply influenced by his upbringing as the youngest of four siblings, which cultivated his naturally generous spirit. He often helped others, a trait that remained a hallmark of his character throughout his life.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Luther and Laura Luttrell, as well as his siblings Normandean Supernois, Norman Luttrell, and Neva Jean Stubby. Though they are gone, the lessons and love they imparted will forever resonate through Melvin's family.
