Paul Depler

September 15, 2015

Paul A. Depler, 65, of Sedgwick died September 15, 2015. Born to Olive and Maurice Depler on December 21, 1949 in their home. Paul met his wife Rita by being set up on a blind date in 1973. The couple married but after one year they chose to separate. Rita’s mother passed six years later, bringing the two back together. They were able to reconcile and were married again in 1980. They have three children, Jillian, James and Joey Depler. Paul was overwhelmed with joy with the arrival of each of his children. The family lived in Colorado for a few years, the boys were even born in Colorado. Estes Park was a favored destination where they could be surrounded by family and natural beauty all around. A job with Boeing, now Spirit, brought the family back to Kansas. Paul and the family spent time together bowling, Paul even belonged to a few leagues. Specifically he bowled with a league at West Acres for almost 30 years. Paul had the gift of gab as some may remember, he had a story for any situation! Fitting for a storyteller, he enjoyed fishing with friends and family. When he was not bowling or fishing, Paul enjoyed being with his family at home. He was a huge sy-fy fan, Star Trek being at the top of preferred programs, even if it was a re-run! When in 2008 the first grandbaby was born, Rayanna, and Paul absolutely adored her. Wherever Grandpa was, it was certain Rayanna was close by. They had a tradition of reading “The Night before Christmas” every year on Christmas Eve. Undoubtedly Rayanna was the joy of Paul’s life from the moment she arrived. Paul suffered from a heart condition which worsened in June 2015, and he was never able to make a full recovery. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents; Brother, James Depler. Survived by wife Rita Depler; Children, Jillian, James and Joey Depler; Grandchild, Rayanna Baird; Brother, Robert Depler; Sisters, Doreen Waechter and Jeanette Eslinger. Visitation will be held at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton, Kansas on Sunday, September 20, 2015 from 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. with family present to greet friends from 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, September 21, 2015 at Petersen Funeral Home, followed by burial in Sedgwick, Kansas at Hillside Cemetery. There will be a dinner following the burial at 514 N. Franklin in Sedgwick. The family would like to extend an invitation to anyone who would like to attend.

  1. To Paul’s Family:

I am very saddened to hear about Paul. Paul and I worked together at Spirit/Boeing for many years.

As his obit stated, he enjoyed telling stories of his past and I enjoyed listening to them. He was a man who had such a huge smile that went from ear to ear. I cannot ever remember a time when he was angry, as he was always happy.

Paul, I will miss that big smile, but I know you are in a better place now, no longer suffering from all those aches and pains.

  2. Sending my deepest sympathy in the lost of my cousin Paul to his family and friends. Paul’s family and friends are in my prayers and thoughts in their loss. Cousin Garry Dean Depler
