Shirley Ruth Long, (Mosburg), retired RN and homemaker, died December 16, 2024 in Leonardville KS. She was born February 10, 1933 on the family farm near Clay Center, KS. The first child of Ernest and Viola Mosburg, she attended Hannibal Country School and graduated from Clay County Community High School in 1951. Shirley met Walter Long at an Easter Sunrise service in 1950 and they were married August 28, 1953 at the Broughton Methodist Church. Shirley graduated from Asbury School of Nursing in 1954.
Shirley nursed polio victims at Providence Hospital in Anchorage for two years where Walt was stationed during the Korean War. They returned to Salina where Walt finished his undergraduate degree at Kansas Wesleyan.
They then moved to Newton, KS, followed by Northampton, MA, Cincinnati, OH, and St. Louis, MO, before returning to Newton. Shirley worked at Axtell Hospital and Bethel Hospital and then in area clinics for 27 additional years.
Shirley enjoyed bicycling with her husband, reading, walking, tending to her flowers, Bible study and traveling, especially to be with her grandchildren. After retirement she volunteered at Health Ministries. She was an active charter member of Trinity Heights United Methodist Church.
Proceeding her in death were her parents, her brother Larry, and her husband Walt. Survivors include children Sheri Appel (Jon), Wesley (Sara), and Wayne (Sheri Anne); grandchildren Jared, Logan (Devin), Aaron (Lindsey), Sienna, Krista (Ethan), Wilder, Matthew, and Sage; and two great grandchildren Juliana and Jonah.
A celebration of life service will be held at 10:00 on February 1 at Trinity Heights United Methodist Church in Newton. Burial will follow at Broughton Cemetery near Clay Center, KS.
Memorial contributions can be made to the church’s adult or children’s library fund.
