Wilbur A. Sauerwein 88, died Tuesday April 16, 2013 at his Newton Presbyterian Manor Apartment. He was born July 18, 1924 in Hesston, Kansas to Charles and Nellie Belle (Hawkey) Sauerwein. He married Bonnie Dell Reaugh on March 22, 1948, she preceded him in death on January 23, 2008.  Wilbur was a retired farmer and  Dairyman.  He was a member of the First United Church of Christ in Newton, KS. He was also a founding member of the Harvey County Rural Water District #1 and served on the Board of Directors of the Farmers COOP. Wilbur was a 32nd degree Mason with the Scottish Rite and he was also a member of the Walton Lions Club.  He Enjoyed fishing, and spending time at coffee with his friends at the Whistle Stop Café in Walton.  Wilbur enjoyed spending time with his loving family, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Wilbur was known for his large collection of well over 500 hats. He enjoyed the times local bus tours would stop by to see his hat collection and visit.

 

Survivors include sons: Donald and and his wife Charlotte Sauerwein of Newton, KS; Charles and his wife Carolyn Sauerwein of Cimmeron, KS; Mark Sauerwein of Newton, KS; daughters Janet and her husband Larry Matschull of Midland, TX  and Denise and her husband Jim Sullivan of  Leavenworth, KS; Brother Ardith Sauerwein of Peabody, KS; and sister Virginia  of Newton, KS. Wilbur has 13 grandchildren and 14 great grandchldren

 

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, brother Robert Sauerwein; sisters Gladys Miller, Marjorie Guthrie, Ruth Guthrie, Marion Winsor, Lucille Dey Putnam, Rose Elaine Stehman,  Charlene Hamm and Wilda Yarnell.

 

A memorial service will be held on Saturday April 20, 2013  at 1:00pm at  First United Church of Christ in Newton, KS with Pastor Jerry Scribner and Chaplain Jerroll Martens presiding.  Private family burial will be in the Walton Cemetery, Walton, KS.
